The big issue with many sugar-free drinks and foods is their acidity. Our tooth enamel (the hard, protective outer layer) is strong, but acid weakens it. When teeth are exposed to acid, the enamel softens and can slowly wear away. We call this dental erosion.
● Diet Soft Drinks: Most diet sodas are very acidic, thanks to ingredients like phosphoric acid and citric acid. They can soften enamel just like regular sugary drinks.
● Sports Drinks: Even sugar-free sports drinks are often acidic, especially if you sip them often.
● "Sugar-Free" Lollies and Sweets: While they lack sugar, many sugar-free lollies, especially sour ones, use acids for flavour. This can make them damaging to your enamel.
● Flavoured Mineral Waters: Some of these, though seemingly healthy, can be quite acidic due to added flavourings.
